  7. Summary: Babilar, formerly known as the city of Manhattan, may give David answers he needs. The city is ruled by the mysterious High Epic named Regalia, and David is sure Babilar will lead him to what he needs to find. And while entering another city oppressed by a High Epic despot is a gamble, David's willing to risk it. Because killing Steelheart left a hole in David's heart. A hole where his thirst for vengeance once lived. Somehow, he filled that hole with another Epic: Firefight. And he's willing to go on a quest darker, and more dangerous even, than the fight against Steelheart to find her, and to get his answers.

  8. Full opinion: The second part of the trilogy was a surprise. I had such a high expectations because of the first book and how it impacted me that those expectations lead me to think that the second book would not be as great as I wanted it to be. But I was wrong, we pick up a few months after the fight with Steelheart, the departure of Megan and the surprising news that Prof is an Epic. To me on the last chapter of the first book it gave me the impression that Prof let, but in the second book he is still with the Reckoners, which I was so happy, as I did not want it to be like professor against alumni. (Little did I know) we start the book by seeing that the group have been fighting some Epics that have tried to destroy the city, after a few encounters, they realize that all this Epics have been send by someone called Regalia. So Prof, Tia and David leave to Babilar as the others stay and keep protecting Newcago. At this moment, in the book there is like a hint that Tia, Regalia and Prof know each other but it’s not said in any specific moment yet.Once they have arrived in Babilar, a ruined NYC flooded up to the top of the skyscrapers, that are being used by the citizens as homes, connected by ladders, Prof, David, and Tia meet with a new group of Reckoners integrated by Val, the tough-headed operations leader of the Babilar Reckoners, Exel, the extremely large and friendly giant of the team, and Mizzy, the spunky and clumsy point/repair and equipment manager, which develops a friendship with David. The new group lead Prof, Tia and David inside the city by boats and explain them about how the city works, how Regalia’s powers work which are: being able to control the water and water level and being able to project herself upon the water's surface and see things near the water surface. And also how she rules the city. The city that mister Sanderson created as their Manhattan is quite peaceful, there is a lot of people and diversity, and it seems like a place to be with one another without that fear that conquered the city of Newcago. But it soon enough when they realize that there is something wrong as a new Epic, called Obliteration is attacking the city with his abilities to absorb and disperse amazing amounts of heat, teleport in the wake of danger, as well as enhanced strength. This Epic is famous because he doesn’t want to rule he just wants to destroy, so the Reckoners know there is some evil plan behind it. From this point, there is so many things happening that it truly surprised me, it is a fact that the second book manages to have the great amount of portion of action from all the books, as the first one is the introduction, the second the action and the third is the final development. But I did not expect half the thing that happened. First all the new Epics that are with Regalia or Obliteration and how they use their powers, like Newton and Knoxx that in the end they try to help Obliteration and his thirst to gain as much energy from the sun as possible. Then the underwater base so regalia can’t spot them as she can see everything that happens above the water level. The fight between them and how Megan appears, how Prof has to use his powers once again and almost lost control of them. I particularly enjoyed how the relationship between Prof and David changes in this books, as it’s no longer as a master and his pupil, but in this is like every time Prof uses his powers he gets angrier and impatient and how affects with Megan appearing again and how David is dealing with that. Then it all clash as Prof puts David in a prison inside the base and they leave to fight Obliteration again. Then David decides that the smartest thing to do is to shoot a bullet trough out the window off the base which leads to Regalia finding out where they hide and appearing in front of David. Then leading to a conversation with her and Calamity, letting us know that no, Calamity is not a star in heaven, no it is an Epic. That was brilliant and unexpected, at least to me. But it was brilliant. Then Calamity himself offers David powers, as you do, and David obviously says no as he has conquered his fear of water and is send back to Earth. In there, he is able to kill Newton with her weakness, compliments, she was afraid of being perfect because she was the black sheep of the family, with Mizzy's help, who was on point to assassinate Newton, after convincing her that Regalia knew their plans and they would fail. Then, David rushes to Megan's aid at a burning building, where Prof gifts him with some of his shielding powers to save her. David is too late, as he discovers that Megan had rigged the high-tech gun Tia gave him to shoot her future self she could die of fire, which was her weakness and would disable her reincarnation abilities, and lead us to think that she had succeeded. He then finds Regalia through shooting at Obliteration and grabbing onto him as he automatically teleported away, and finds her actually dying from cancer in a hospital bed next to Dawnslight, a benevolent Epic in a coma since childhood, who grants the city its eccentric ways, light and food, partially from an image of a city he's had in his mind as a child. That explains how the city is decorated and that feeling of paradise when they first arrive on the book. It is not very clear if after this, Obliteration dies or teleports away when David reveals that what Epics dream of in nightmares are their weakness. As he watches a projection of where Prof is and Regalia tells him that all the energy Obliteration had been gathering and the part she cut out of the Epic in exchange for more power was for a bomb, one she knew Prof could contain with his powers. As she planned, Prof does so and loses control, killing Val and Exel, which I has very sad for the later as he was very charismatic and found him really goodhearted. David kills Regalia in fury and Prof escapes from Babilar and we don’t know what happens to him. That's why I loved this book, it was full of surprises and at the end of the book I could not believe how much development there was since the beginning. beautifully written, amazing new characters, scenarios. The third one is going to be epic.
